Usage of remote sensing data to investigate volcanic activity: Examples from Iceland
Gro Birkefeldt Møller PedersenMapping and monitoring of volcanic eruptions are important from a hazard perspective. Not only in order to warn the near-by population, but also to improve the understanding of eruption dynamics, which is necessary hazard modelling. This talk will mainly focus on how remote sensing data is implemented to study present day emplacement of lava flows, as well as improve mapping of historical lava flows with a temporal remote sensing archive stretching back to 1945. In addition the role of monitoring ash and gas dispersal by remote sensing will be covered. Examples will be given from the Holuhraun eruption (Aug 2014- Feb 2015) and the five most recent Hekla eruptions (1947-48; 1970, 1980-81, 1991, 2000).
